Dar es Salaam, meaning The Haven of Peace in Arabic, is located on the Tanzanian coast and has one of the best natural harbours in the world. From a small Swahili town in the middle of the 19th century, the seaport has grown into the commercial capital of Tanzania. South of the city you will find long stretches of sandy beaches,  ideal for long walks. The temperate sea and proximity of coral reefs ensure a rich marine life. This is the place to spot dolphins, whales and turtles, who are frequent visitors to these shores.

Ras Kutani is an idyllic small getaway, approximately 35km south of Dar es Salaam, looking out on the tranquil Indian Ocean. It is a barefoot experience with a unique location on the beach, between the sea, a freshwater lagoon and a coastal forest. Nature lovers will enjoy the birds and the walks through the tropical forest behind the lodge. Here  you will find more than 132 different species of trees and four species of monkeys, including the spectacular black-and-white colobus. Ras Kutani offers 9 charming cottages with ocean and lagoon views and large front verandas with daybeds and hammocks. Tea and biscuits are served in the morning on the terrace of your cottage  allowing you to enjoy the view and slowly wake up in your hammock. There is a small pool, and a restaurant that serves excellent meals. Ras Katuni is only a 1.5 hour drive or a 10 minutes flight from Dar es Salaam airport to Ras Kutani's private airstrip.
